Various other methods exist that are related to the one presented here. This method is unique in that it uses LyX and a lot of script “ glue code” to hide the complexity of writing in SGML from the user. However, if for some reason you prefer to not use LyX, the shell scripts, the stylesheets or some other part of this method, you might want to have a look at the following alternatives:
Use a makefile like the one in DocBook Makefile Templates (in this link, if you open it and scroll up to the end, you will find the influential posting of Nik Clayton that outlined a working way to get images in all formats of a document (see Section 7.2.2), definitely a recommended reading).
Use the makefile of the LDP.
Use the O'Reilly stylesheets. The collection comprises an initial pass at documenting and publishing the stylesheets used by ORA to convert DocBook documents into HTML for CD-ROM publication, and conversion of DocBook into tagged Frame for print publication and for copy returned to non-SGML-using authors.
The stylesheets are in the form of a single SGML document which is both a DocBook <book> documenting the stylesheets and the stylesheets themselves.
FIXME: Unfortunately, all my efforts to locate the “ O'Reilly DSSSL Stylesheets” on the Web were unsuccessfull. The links I had and those I find, all point to non-existent resources.
There have been various previous attempts at a script solution to document generation, see i.e. in the docbook mailing list
In Preparing Cogent Documentation, you will find another detailed discussion of the document production process using SGML/XML.
