My sister is running a site about Linux(http://www.tux.gr).She would like to put a Php How-to.Is there a Greek version?If there isn't she is willing to translate it if it's ok with you.

Tell her the following: the PHP-Nuke HOWTO started also as a translation. You can read how it all started in this PHPNuke tutorial translation thread. The best way to do the translation would be to install the LyX editor ( http://www.lyx.org ). I still use an old version (1.2.0) of it, but you could try the newest one and we see if my scripts still work.

The process is: you take the LYX version of the book from the Formats section, you do the translation in LyX, then my scripts transform it to SGML, correct the SGML that comes out of LyX, then produce all other versions.

The advantage of this method is that you only need to translate the words, leaving everything else (like "environments", SGML tags etc) untouched. This way paragraphs, admonitions (warnings, notes etc), callouts (those small numbers in circles that you see in some code), code environments etc., all remain intact - and you don't need to recreate them.

I don't know how LyX handles Greek- I hope you try and tell me!

As a first step, I suggest she gets a user name here and joins us in the discussion. Then, she should read the above links, to get an idea of how we worked to get the translation from italian to english done. She could install LyX and see how it works in Greek. She will have to familiarize herself with the way LyX works (very easy frontend to TeX/LaTeX). Then we try a small translated piece. By then I may have a new version out, so there is no need for pressing things to go fast.

It's a good thing we are not in a hurry cause I started a lot of things all together lately and my uni has still to start,so I want to see how i will manage with all these.I'm in another city now(Athens),I will download the stuff as soon as I get back home,and I will let you know when I have sth new.

But I finish my exams in a week so I can hardly do anything
till then But we can start talking about it already and maybe

First and foremost: which version of LyX?

Then: how does LyX work with greek? Everything O.K.?

Third: Write a paragraph in greek and send me the LyX file. I'll have to see how my method works with it. Or you try it yourself!

speak in english,right?Anyway,I have lyx version
1.3.2.Writing in Greek was easy after all,I just clicked Edit/Preferences/Language settings/Language/Default language--->Greek.
And you can write in english and greek just by
exchanging languages through the keyboard.
I sent you a paragraph written in Greek using lyx.

I would like to say a big thanx for the precious effort you have done and stil making, the PHPNuke Manual as well as the other projects. I am a student in a University here in Greece (University of the Aegean - dept.of Product & Systems Design Engineering) and also on the admininstration and development team of a Cyber Community that we want to create for the students and stuff of our University, called MYaegean.
Recently, I have read that a project for the Greek translation of the PHP-Manual is running and I would like to cooperate with the others in order to help the idea. I am planning to suggest to the memmbers of the development team to work all together with me. This -I think- would be also a good opportunity to understand and see the PHPNuke CMS. We are now around 20 students on only my department that work on this project. But the number may grows..

So, can you tell me briefly what would be the actions we have to take and presizely how to contact the other fellowes that are in the translation project of the manual, in order to join them?

I would appreciate any help! Thank you and continue the good work!

See first the sections The book behind the book and How to translate this HOWTO of the PHP-Nuke HOWTO.

Then:

- get LyX and install it (you probably need Linux for this)

- get the .lyx file from the Formats section and translate it.

- translate only the text, do not change any LyX environment or other settings.

- pass the translated .lyx file through the scripts as described in Document processing with LyX and SGML, or send it to me and I will do it for you - but give it a try, since you have 20 students who want to learn...

But before you start translating, I have to check how well my method works with greek - this will take a few days, marouli (see above) has sent me an example .lyx file with greek for testing.

As soon as I see that everything is O.K., you can start translating.

Do NOT translate the index entries - unless you want to get mad! There is an automatic procedure for the Index, described in Automatic Index generation - you should apply it at the end of the translation. You could use one of the scripts to delete all index entries, so that you can read the .lyx file easier.
