I have seen the warnings about NOT using Notepad or Wordpad as a text editor. I agree with Chris that UltraEdit is an excellent editor. However, if you use it for more than 45 days or so, you have to pay money for it. Since I hate paying for anything, I use Winsyntax V2.0. It is also excellent but not quite as excellent as UltraEdit. It does have the big advantage that it is freeware.
Get it at download.com. If you do, you will never have to worry about added characters again. And no, I am not on the board of directors. |

Thanks for the input, arnoldkrg. So now we have two alternatives, UltraEdit and WinSyntax. Any other suggestions?
How about HTMLkit and EditPad? I heard favourable opinions on them too, but I would like to hear the voice of our members. Anyone tested these two? _________________ Regards

I checked out EditPad but, although it allows document printing and word wrapping (neither of which are available in Winsyntax) the color syntaxing is disabled and the bracket finder isnt working either in the free version. I wouldnt use it or recommend it. I tried downloading HTML-Kit but the download link is not working at either download.com or at the developer's site. So I cannot comment on that one.
However, while I was looking, I found a little gem of an editor, again free.
The name is Crimson Editor 3.45 R2 (Freeware) it is available at Crimson Editor
It does everything that Winsyntax does and then some more. It allows document printing and syntax coloring as well as bracket finding and a host of other tools.
I might be switching from Winsyntax to Crimson Editor

Thank you for sharing this with us, arnoldkrg! You see what a small forum can do? A better module, a better editor - we can help each other and get new impulses on the way!
Anyone else wishing to share his/her experiences with editors? Please feel free. _________________ Regards

| Well I don't do much coding, but the text editor I use for any coding is the one built into cute ftp pro, since it's the way I access my online files. It works well. Not sure how much of a help this was though since the only function in it that I know of is that it shows what the line's number is withough affecting the actual file. |

Thanks hellfire. A decent text editor should, among other things, support syntax highlighting. Does cute ftp pro's editor have this feature?
Let me tell you what I use - well, if you searched my homepage a little, you already know that I am a vi fan. In fact, with some configuration, you can make vi quite sexy! _________________ Regards

The site is working now for HTML-Kit, as I just DL'd it, and looks good so far, is free for personal use. Missing some bells and whistles, but needed funcitionality seems to be enough for purposes. _________________ Galt |

Sorry for lack of reply I wanted to confirm that it did and I haven't had it on my comp since I posted last message. Ok so I'm fairly sure it has syntax highlighting, and a few other features I didn't realize were there till today. I'll look around today while I use it to edit pages for a new site I'm workin on. |

Hey! Hope all of you are doing well !
Interesting thread. I just downloaded vi. Have been using WinSyntax. Maybe I'll post my comparison eval when I figure some more 'stuff' out _________________ *******************************
